Technical specification
Definition
Document detailing the technical architecture, technologies used, APIs, database and infrastructure. Part of the specification, it primarily addresses the development team.
Detailed explanation
The technical spec translates the functional needs of the SOW into concrete technical solutions. It covers: the choice of stack (front, back, database), the system architecture (monolithic, microservices, serverless), third-party integrations (API, webhooks, SSO), performance requirements (LCP, TTFB, Core Web Vitals), security (authentication, encryption, OWASP compliance), the deployment strategy and maintenance. Without a technical spec, two developers on the same project will produce two different architectures.
Concrete example
Recommended stack for a B2B SaaS app: Rails 8 + PostgreSQL + Redis, Hotwire + Tailwind front end, Kamal + Docker hosting, Devise + Google OAuth authentication, Mollie payments, Sentry + Ahoy monitoring.
